Smartphones!

3 Nov

OMG! OMG!! Now I know what the fuss is all about with smartphones.

Let me rewind.

I was one of those die-hard functional people who still relied on good ol multimedia phones… you know… the standard phone/text/camera phone.  When the iPhone came out and people stood in line to make a purchase, I thought, ‘what a bunch of weirdos.’  I strongly believed Phones are for making calls and getting text messages.  Anything else could be accomplished on a laptop. Why de-compartmentalize my life  with one  gadget?

I don’t particularly love to run after technology the way people swoon over iPods or iPhones or ipads or kindles or netbooks or any other new craze that came along.  I might test it out of curiosity, but shelling $200 to $500 bucks for one piece of equipment that is not a flat screen TV is just not my thing.

Don’t get me wrong, I was tempted to get an iPhone but AT&T just scares me.  I am a Verizon lover through and through.  When the Droid came out, I was like aha!  Something I could actually sink my teeth into.  The Motorola design was so-so but the Droid OS was kinda cool so I thought I would get one – until I saw the price tag.

So I waited for the price to drop from $300 – to $200 – to $150.  But my wallet just refused to cooperate.

Then – a few weeks ago at a conference full of smart-phone loving web geeks and marketing people, my phone rang and I picked it up to shut it off…to the amusement of my fellow session goers.  They giggled.  Giggled!! At my phone. If it had been grade school I would have cried.

When I got home, I got online and got a droid…with a small d.  Yes, it is an LG Ally and free with a two-year contract from Verizon but I did not mind because (A) I don’t intend to leave Verizon and (B) I have never paid for a phone in my life.  I am that cheap financially conscientious.  (Remember we are in a recession and we need to live within our means).

Lil’ d arrived last night and I spent all evening playing with the thing squealing like a school girl when I realized the things I could do ( I don’t think I have been this excited since we got HBO AND showtime). The only downside is that the battery life sucks and I will have to get a car charger or something but whatever….I can now answer my phone with the techie pride I yearn.

I am never going back to the days of regular phones … not when I can access all of my six e-mail accounts, my blog, the almighty god google, weather, Facebook, twitter, eBay, amazon … I think my laptop is in danger of becoming obsolete.

On another note, I made my very first Korean dish.  It is called Pajeon.  It is a kind of seafood pancake.  I made Turtle try it first.  I figured if he keeled over then I would know it was not safe for human consumption.  I kid.

Also, I got this book called the Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives.  I read about it from another blog.  I am so sorry, I can’t remember the name of the blog …but I got it on Amazon and I just finished the first chapter.  It is by Lola Shoneyin (aka Wole Soyinka’s daughter-in-law).  She is talented in her own right and quite a humorous writer.  I can’t wait to finish it and give ya’ll the low down.

Well welcome! I’m glad you have joined the rest of us in the new age of smartphones. Droid is a very wise choice.

Yesterday my droid phone met with an unfortunate end after losing a battle with the pavement in front of my house. Quite sad. So I am back to using my pre-Droid phone which cannot really be called a Smartphone but resembles a Blackberry (which irritates me) and is sufficient for web, e-mail, picture messaging and a few other things.

Now I’m suffering from Droid withdrawal so I have to get a new one tomorrow!

P.S: that pancake doesn’t look half bad. Whats in it?

    • lucidlilith November 5, 2010 at 10:56 am #

The pancake had a mix of crab, calamari, squid, scallops etc. You eat it with sauce made from cummin, soy sauce, chili pepper etc.

Geez, you are one of the people I make fun of. I didn’t know people still used flip phones! my own smartphone just quit on me today, sigh.

Those pajeons or peons or whatever look really good.

Isn’t that book supposed to be one of naija’s classics? I’ll add that to my post-MBA life to do list.

I still haven’t bowed. But I’m on the edge, lol. It will be a BB that I will fall for, or maybe an iphone, na ATT get me. My fear is that my laptop and writing will suffer. Now I can still write and go on the SM but with the BB, the crack may become too strong…

    • lucidlilith November 5, 2010 at 11:20 am #

I just never got around to a BB. They seemed so … I don’t know…corporate. But I will warn you, once you get one, you are done.
